Stupid Hungarians Fooled by Chain Email about Stupid American
A chain email that has crisscrossed Hungary this week has left some of its recipients feeling inappropriately judgmental, if not downright dumbass. According to the email, which came accompanied by four photos like the one to the left, an American tourist ruined a rental car after driving it 200 kilometers in first gear, having not realized that the car wasn't equipped with an automatic transmission.
The email went on to say that the barom ('idiot' American rented a Citroën from Sixt Rent-a-Car, and drove it from Budapest to Pécs at 80 kilometers an hour in first, making an "ear-hurting" noise and burning the engine to cinders.
For good or ill, however, the whole thing was just another piece of internet lore, though according to Index.hu, a very successful one. Sixt manager Gábor Dévai spent Monday trying to clear up the misunderstanding. "Tons of people called, someone called from the German [company] Siemens, all asking what happened, even my old friends emerged, who had received the letter."
In reality, the driver of the car, which was indeed rented from Sixt, had been using the car for several days when it suddenly burst into flames, and firefighters had to be called to put it out. The cause of the fire is being investigated. Dévai thinks the letter must have been written by an employee of Wallis Rt's Citroen repair service, where the car was taken from Sixt. Meanwhile, the driver in question was actually a Hungarian, and one smart enough to have scored himself an American passport.
