UKTerrorist are reporting that Valve intend to start charging for their new Steam service from Spring next year. The new Steam service has been a thorn in the side of many gamers as constant updates are usually met with constant problems and random errors. Once this service is improved Valve are intending to charge customers.
"Recently it has emerged from reliable sources within Valve that the new Steam service, the content-service platform which carries Counter-Strike 1.6, will charge all customers wishing to use the service from Spring next year possibly even earlier once several bugs have been ironed out. This news is likely to anger the Counter-Strike gaming community as everyone has already purchased a copy of Half-Life or even Counter-Strike itself. How this affects future Counter-Strike or any Half-Life multiplayer competitions remains to be seen, but it cannot be good.
Remember once ID began to charge gaming events for Quake 3 the game was dropped by both the CPL and WCG and the community faded away. With the CPL adopting Halo for the PC next year and rumours that WCG will be using MOHAA to replace CS, could this be the final nail in the coffin for CS."
